Col du Galibier (2642m)

The Col du Galibier (2642m) ascent from Valloire. 17.6km of glorious views with an average 6.8% incline. Professional riders can reach the top in under an hour but expect it to take up to 2. It is typical on a Ciclo Magic cycling holiday to summit the south side of the Galibier in the morning, descend to Valloire for lunch and then begin this climb. This means good pacing and sufficient fuelling are super important. Respect this climb, you will need that extra gas to negotiate the final few steeper kilometres at altitude.

Departing Valloire and its bustling cafes, restaurants and mountain stores, the road climbs over 8% to reach the village of Les Verneys. A welcome view considering the next couple of kilometres stretch out almost flat. Use this to recover if needed, there’s a long way to go. Some short picturesque switchbacks follow to Bonnenuite village and riders can regain a climbing rhythm. 12km, 11km, 10km to go. The iconic col infographic signs pass.

Soon the road becomes shallow again. Take advantage of this. Drink, eat and spin the legs. In the area of Plan Lachat there is a mountain restaurant and a last chance to buy a quick drink or snack. It may seem counter intuitive to stop mid-climb but it’s much preferred to slumping in a haze during the final kilometres. You want to enjoy it after all.

Before the 8km to go marker, riders cross La Valloirette river and view the expanse of terrain already covered. Over half-way but do not be fooled. The second half has a sting in its tail. With an average incline of 8.5% and soon crossing 2000m in altitude, this is certainly the most difficult part. Take in the view, breathe the truly fresh air, and conquer this mountain.

3km to go and the summit is in view. An assortment of bikes, hikers and touring cars. With 1km to go the Galiber tunnel looms and riders turn left for a final surge at an average of 9%. Swing round the final hairpin and be treated to the most incredible views of the whole valley only to be rivalled by those reaching far beyond Briancon at the top.

Ride this climb on a Ciclo Magic holiday with full back up and support. Recover at your leisure back at the chalet and enjoy your 2 course evening meal with a few well earned beers.
